The highs and lows of my student life
It was a very productive day and not only did I attend two important classes, I tied up a bunch of loose ends putting me on track with my studying journey. From hope, to despair to pushing through and figuring it out, I’ve been through a full cycle of emotions.
Two things didn’t go as I originally planned, I woke up at 7 am because my brain was still in deep recovery sleep at 6 am with lots of vivid dreams. I’ve lingered in bed before because of general fatigue, but this morning I could tell I was in an important part of my sleep cycle because of the way I was dreaming. I chose to let it be and it was a very good choice that gave me clarify and energy all day.
The other element that didn’t go according to the plan was my tutoring session, unfortunately my tutor had to postpone to Thursday. I used my extra time to do my own math studies with the help of Khan academy which reassured me that I will eventually master all the concepts. Knowing explanations I can understand are at one click of a louse away is comforting. I made sure to refresh my extended to-do list (I don’t blog about that one) and took care of acquiring the final books I needed. Everything is in very good standing when it comes to my running around doing random tasks.
Though the core of my day didn’t lay in my super productive between classes activities, but rather the teacher I met today. He will teach me algebra and differential calculations, the two subjects that intimidated me the most. Thankfully, he’s a great teacher! That was a huge relief and he explained this algebra class is easy to follow regardless of ones math history. The second class almost brought me to tears. The auditorium we are in makes it impossible for me to hear the teacher nor the students on top of making it hard to read on the board. I tried approach the teacher to ask him about recording his class with the new program I will use to assist me with my learning handicaps and he was reluctant. That crushed my soul. I did go straight to the program director’s office after class to explain the impossible conditions of the class on top of being the hardest subject of the semester. She was very understanding and will be figuring solutions for me and the rest of the class, I was not the only one to complain.
My student assistance advisor also got to work in finding ways to have some sort of a microphone and headphones system so I could get a clear audio of the teachers voice. It’s great to see how the university staff wants us to succeed and I think solutions will quickly come along. Unfortunately I have 4 classes and 3 subjects thought in that nightmare room. I’m not alone and I will for sure do everything in my power to defeat the horrible acoustic of this old auditorium.
One a happier note, the first two week will be mostly revision which will allow me to tackle my math homework, and be more ground to integrate new notions. I’m still terrified by the skills I need to crunch in a few days. As that teacher said, he thought successfully the algebra class in four days intensive. At least that one class is less of a concern.
Things are falling into place even if my mind still wonders in past memories of P. Having something to do and a sense of purpose is great for my mood. If I manage to have decent grades I’ll be so incredibly proud. I do aim for it but I’m not cultivating unrealistic expectations.
I’m grateful for technology that supports students.
(I will edit in the morning since my data is limited and my secondary study place, the McDonald’s near my place, decided to close 45 min early.)
Essentials of today’s to-do:
- Register to all the student help centers for my program — NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MY SCHEDULE AND EACH CLASS HAS STUDY PERIODS WITH HELP ALREADY.
- Buy the necessary books for that class — GOT MY CHEMISTRY BOOK BUT THE DIFFERENTIAL CALCULATION BOOK HAS NOT BEEN ORDERED IN BY THE TEACHER SO NO BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE YET.
- Prepare my lunch for the next day — I DID IT IN THE MORNING.
- Do my homework — I DID SPEND 2 HOURS REVIEWING MATH CONCEPTS
- Continue my math studies
- Get my student card
- Find a homework teammate
- Do the dishes
Daily (for tomorrow)
Be on time and act on each teacher’s demands.
Commit to doing my homework in advance and use the university study period to my benefit.
Complete my sciences preparation certificate as best as I can.
